#3:  Hiring Marc Trestman

One should be honest though. Hiring Trestman in the first place was always a mistake. It was a classic characteristic of then-GM Phil Emery. He got too fancy with his choice and it came back to bite him. Trestman had not been in the NFL for almost a decade, spending an extended period as a head coach in the CFL. People were surprised when his name came up in interviews.

They were even more surprised, even shocked that Chicago hired him over reigning NFL Coach of the Year Bruce Arians. The sticking point at the time was believed to be that Arians wanted to bring in his own defensive coordinator rather than keep Rod Marinelli. Thus the Bears went with Trestman, but that ended up not mattering because Marinelli didn’t wish to work for him and left for Dallas.

Arians ended up getting the Arizona Cardinals to multiple playoff appearances including an NFC championship and turned around the career of Carson Palmer. Trestman was fired after his disastrous second season.
