Chicago Bears: 5 Biggest Regrets from the Past Decade

#4: Keeping Mel Tucker
People dump on the Marc Trestman era, and with good reason. However, the guy at least did the primary job he was hired to do. He improved the Bears offense. It was the #2 scoring offense in the NFL in 2013. Most of that was done with a backup quarterback in Josh McCown running the show. So it’s not like the guy couldn’t get production out of his offense. His Achilles heel was the defense.
His hiring of Mel Tucker proved disastrous that first year as it ended up costing the team in the final two games of the season where it gave up over 80 points to the Eagles and Packers. Trestman had a decision to make the next offseason. Either keep Tucker or try to find somebody who could do better. He chose the former. The Bears defense gave up the second-most points in the league in 2014.
That decision, punctuated by back-to-back 50-point disasters against the Packers and Patriots, doomed Trestman.
