3. Trace McSorley, Penn State

While head coach James Franklin gets a considerable amount of recognition, it’s not tough to say that the success that Penn State has garnered over the past two seasons has a lot to do with quarterback Trace McSorley.

McSorley is small in stature (6’0, 202 lbs) and does not have an elite cannon of an arm but he makes for it with clutch play, football IQ, veteran reliability, and athleticism. The Nittany Lions have won 22 games the past two seasons and at times, the play of McSorley has been the saving grace for the talented Penn State program.

The 2016 Big Ten Championship versus Wisconsin was a clear example as he tossed four touchdowns along with 384 yards. His game-winning touchdown on the road against Iowa this past season was another example.

All eyes will be on McSorley even more this season with the departure of running back Saquon Barkley to the NFL and Penn State will likely lean on the heroics of McSorley even more as well.
