Antonio Brown is the man of the hour for the Madden 19 cover. So who will be the one to go on Madden 20. That’s unknown, but Todd Gurley is an early favorite.

The Los Angeles area seems to be the hot destination in sports these days. The Rams went to the playoffs for the first time since 2006. LeBron James left Cleveland to join the Lakers. It’s suddenly the “it” sports town again after years of being left out in the cold, and Gurley might be it’s best superstar. He proved that much with his insane season in 2017.

The running back was the engine that drove the #1 offense in the NFL, compiling 2,093 yards from scrimmage and scoring 19 touchdowns. For all the love Jared Goff gets, Gurly was the engine that drove the machine and Sean McVay fed him that way. Expectations are he’ll be doing more of the same this coming season, especially if the defense starts to ramp things up.

If so, Adam Rank of NFL.com believes he’s the perfect choice to headline the league’s charter gaming franchise.

"“Los Angeles is the place to be for sports. We have the best player in Major League Baseball, Mike Trout. We have LeBron James. And we have the best running back in the NFL. (Don’t @ me.) Gurley is coming off a season where he posted 2,093 all-purpose yards and scored 19 total touchdowns — both tops in the NFL. He’s just getting started in Sean McVay’s offense. And with those Hollywood connections, I have Gurley as the early favorite for next season.”"

Gurley is almost certain to have stiff competition for the honor

The good news for Gurley is it’s much easier to gain the Madden cover than it is to win MVP in the NFL. Normally this would simply devolve into a competition of which quarterback was better this. However, it’s unlikely he’s going to have it easy either way. There’s a host of star players at other positions who could be vying for the honor despite risks from the fabled Madden Curse that Brown is about to face.

Chiefs competitors include Saints running back Alvin Kamara, Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey, Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, Raiders pass rusher Khalil Mack, and Vikings receiver Stefon Diggs. This isn’t even including quarterbacks Jimmy Garoppolo, Carson Wentz and Patrick Mahomes who could be favorites if they have a good year as well. It should be a fun debate as the season unfolds over the next few months.
