#3:  Deacon Jones

The “Minister of Defense” was probably the first man who turned the position of defensive end into what we now call edge defenders. The key difference is the latter is known for being a specialist at rushing the passer. Considering Jones is the man responsible for coining the iconic phrase of “sack” when dropping a quarterback for a loss, that seems fitting. Jones made a Hall of Fame career out of terrorizing signal callers for four quarters.

It’s not known for sure how many sacks he had in his career, but most believe he’d still hold the record today if it has been an official statistic in his era. Sadly, despite universal acclaim for his efforts Jones never was able to get a ring. His team made it to the playoffs just three times. Each time they were eliminated in the first game. It was simply a mixture of bad luck and having to play against some great opponents during that era.
