#4:  Dick Butkus

Nowadays it’s the name that defined an era of football. Dick Butkus played his last game in 1972 and to this day he’s still recognized as the most feared player to ever step foot on the field. The middle linebacker wasn’t interested in making friends. He’d do anything and everything in his power to unnerve or infuriate the competition to a point where they couldn’t focus on the task at hand. So often he was successful at it.

People tend to forget that beneath that rough and tough exterior, Butkus was a phenomenal player. Despite frequent knee problems, he went to eight Pro Bowls, intercepted 22 passes and set a record for 27 recovered fumbles. A true defensive superhero in his prime. So to say that this great player never even got to participate in a single playoff game? It’s something that simply doesn’t compute with a lot of people these days.
