People thought Dominic Rhodes was ready to become a star after he went over 1,000 yards rushing with nine touchdowns as a rookie in 2001. Unfortunately, he lost his opportunity when he tore his ACL. For the next four seasons, he was rendered irrelevant as a limited backup behind Pro Bowler Edgerrin James. Most people had forgotten about him.
Yet the Colts coaches kept him around, still believing he had value. In 2006, he would reward their patience. Together with Joseph Addai, he would help form a backfield that rushed for over 1,700 yards that season. Rhodes accounted for 641 and scored five TDs. It was in the playoffs though where he became a true hero.
Rhodes ran for 68 yards against Kansas City, 56 against Baltimore, and 69 against New England in the Colts postseason victories. The Super Bowl was where it all came to a head as he gutted the Chicago Bears for 113 yards and a touchdown. That effort was pivotal to the Colts’ eventual 29-17 victory.
