How high would the Kansas City Chiefs risk a draft pick on Sam Beal?

July 11 will be a busy day in the NFL as the Supplemental Draft will take place at 1 p.m., and it could be one of the most active drafts in recent years. Five players are eligible this year, and the Kansas City Chiefs could be one of the teams who takes a chance on a pick.

With the Chiefs having a major need at cornerback they could dip their toes into the market for Virginia Tech’s Adonis Alexander or Western Michigan’s Sam Beal.

Alexander has dealt with possession of marijuana charges and was ruled academically ineligible for 2018, forcing him to enter the supplemental draft.  Beal was also ruled academically ineligible for next season, according to his head coach.

Both Alexander and Beal were projected day-two picks had they entered the 2018 NFL Draft, and potentially gone high if they played in 2018 for the 2019 NFL Draft.

Kansas City would have a late pick in the Supplemental Draft, where they’d be sorted into the third tier of teams as a playoff team, then mixed into a lottery with the other playoff teams to determine the order.

After not having a first round pick last year the Chiefs have two second round picks in 2019 after trading Marcus Peters to Los Angeles.

Should the Chiefs feel desperate to replace Peters with Beal, who fits their scheme very well, they could fear losing him by waiting until the third round.

Kansas City has Kendall Fuller set to be their starting nickel corner with David Amerson, Keith Reaser, and Steven Nelson competing for the outside jobs.

Josh Gordon is the last player to be drafted in the second round of the supplemental draft, but his issues are far more concerning compared to Beal. Three of the five players taken in the second round of the supplemental draft have been Pro Bowlers, including Gordon, Mike Wahle, and Jamal Williams.

Now the Chiefs must weigh the odds of Beal falling to the in the late third round compared to being safe and keeping both their second round picks next year. Andy Reid likes taking on project players, and Beal could be the perfect one for Kansas City.
