Whitney Houston nails the Star Spangled Banner

There are two types of national anthem renditions. Those that came before Whitney Houston and those that came after. The late music icon was at the peak of her powers in 1990 and she proved it by belting out the single-greatest singing of the Star Spangled Banner that has ever been heard anywhere. People to this day who hear it still get goosebumps.

So try to imagine what it was like for people who saw it live. Many forget Super Bowl XXV between New York Giants and Buffalo Bills was taking place right around the time the Gulf War had started between the United Nations and Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. Thousands of U.S. servicemen were going to the Middle East to battle what at the time was the fourth largest army in the world.

Emotions were high. Houston picked up on that and decided to let the patriotism flow as she sang. It was beautiful and a clear reminder of what an amazing voice she had.
