The Greatest Villain In the History of All 32 NFL Teams
By Erik Lambert
New Orleans Saints
The one good thing that John Mecom Jr. did was bring the New Orleans Saints into existence. That was the extent of his positive contributions to the NFL. After that, it became a series of mismanagement blunders that saw his team go 18 years without a winning season. That’s it. His team was the first to lose to the hapless Buccaneers and had five seasons where they won three games or less.
Is it a coincidence that the Saints made the playoffs for the first time in their existence just one year after Mecom sold the team in 1985? That proves more than anything the man was never interested in building a winning team and was more focused on making money. So he must’ve been thrilled selling the franchise for $64 million after purchasing them for $8.5 million.
Perhaps his legacy can be centered around his utter failure to build a strong enough roster around quarterback Archie Manning. How different would things have been had he actually made the effort rather than coasting most of the way? No one will ever know.
