NFL Season Preview: AFC Dark Horse Playoff Contenders
AFC North Dark Horse: Baltimore Ravens
For the Baltimore Ravens to find themselves as AFC North division champions, a lot will depend on the play of the offense. An offense that was 31st in the league in yards per play (4.6) and 29th in passing yards per game (189.4). *stares at quarterback Joe Flacco*
The team made a very resounding effort to upgrade the offensive unit. There are new receivers in place thanks to free agency (Michael Crabtree, John Brown, and Willie Snead) and new tight ends thanks to the draft (Hayden Hurst, Mark Andrews). The run game was fairly solid behind Alex Collins and will be expected to make considerable strides this upcoming season.
The presence of first round quarterback Lamar Jackson can’t be ignored either, as the Ravens are expected to throw both Jackson and Flacco on the fied together at times to create a dynamic offense.
It is the defensive side of the ball that is the most reliable for the Ravens. The defense was first in forced turnovers and has plenty of veterans to lean on when a play is needed. The group had Pro Bowlers in linebackers C.J. Mosley and Terrell Suggs along with safety Eric Weddle. Strong safety Tony Jefferson put together a strong season also in his first year in a Ravens uniform.
Regardless of what angle you approach when studying the Ravens, the success of this team will need significant improvement on offense and yes, that definitely includes the starting quarterback in Flacco.
