2018 NFL Power Rankings: Biggest QB Teases For All 32 Teams
By Erik Lambert
There’s a reason Tom Landry clung to Craig Morton for so long. In many ways, he looked like the ideal prototype of a quarterback. He was big, had a good arm and ran the offense like a field general. The problem that people didn’t see until big games were he lacked an ability to improvise. If things didn’t go according to the script, his effectiveness dipped.
He had some good seasons in Dallas, leading them to the Super Bowl in 1970. However, his failure to close the deal that year created doubts. Enough to put former 10th round pick Roger Staubach into the mix as a possible starter in 1971. The rest is history. Morton never silenced those doubts about him despite getting the Broncos to the Super Bowl in 1977. The end result was the same.
