By Erik Lambert
Most people now can only think of Colin Kaepernick has a controversial figure who turned the NFL upside down with his national anthem protests. These days he’s considered either a traitor or a hero depending on who you talk to in the football community. Before this though he was actually a prominent NFL quarterback. One who almost became the Next Big Thing.
Kaepernick took the football world by storm in 2012, replacing Alex Smith midseason and leading the 49ers all the way to the Super Bowl. His mixture of mobility and arm strength had not been seen before, at least not to his level of play. He came mere yards from winning the team a championship. Most believed after that he’d be a star in the league for a long time.
Instead he slowly regressed over the next few years until he eventually found the bench and then ended up out of the league before his 30th birthday.
