2018 NFL Power Rankings: Biggest QB Teases For All 32 Teams
By Erik Lambert
He certainly is in the running for the greatest nickname of all-time. Daryle “the Mad Bomber” Lamonica made football a wide-open show in the old American Football League as starter for the Oakland Raiders. He was the epitome of the Al Davis quarterback: big and boasting a live arm that could strike for the deep ball at every possible opportunity.
When the Raiders got him in 1967, he was an instant sensation. He won AFL MVP and got the Raiders to the Super Bowl. He didn’t close the deal. Lamonica remained effective over the next few years but constantly seemed to make big mistakes in big games. As defenses discovered zone schemes in the late 1960s and early ’70s, his weaknesses were fully exposed.
A man who was great in the regular season but never managed to elevate his game when it mattered most.
