Chicago Bears: The 5 Worst Moments of the Past Decade
By Erik Lambert
#4: B.J. Raji pick-six (2011)
Even after Jay Cutler went down with his controversial knee injury in the NFC championship game against Green Bay, the Bears still had a chance in that game. Backup Caleb Hanie stepped in for the 4th quarter and immediately led a touchdown drive that cut the lead to 14-7 with over 12 minutes left to play. The defense was still holding. They had a shot.
Getting the ball back with just over six minutes left, Hanie had a chance to tie the game. Sadly his run of magic wasn’t to last. His lack of experience and familiarity with seeing complex coverages showed up at the worst possible time. The Packers brought a zone blitz that saw big nose tackle B.J. Raji drop into coverage. Hanie never saw it and threw it right to him.
Raji returned the interception 18 yards for a backbreaking touchdown that proved the decisive score of the game. The Packers prevailed 21-14 and went on to win the Super Bowl. The Bears haven’t been back to the playoffs since.
