NFL: One breakout star for each team in the 2018 season
No choice was easier for a breakout player than Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who flashed tremendous talents in the final regular season game of the year. Drafted 10th overall pick year, the former Texas Tech starter was 22 of 35 against Denver and became the first homegrown Chiefs quarterback to win a game since Todd Blackledge in 1987.
Kansas City solidified Mahomes as the starter when they shipped veteran Alex Smith to Washington for Kendall Fuller and a third-round pick, which was subsequently traded to Cincinnati to move up into the second round.
Andy Reid’s history with quarterbacks dating back to Brett Favre and Donovan McNabb is well noted, putting Mahomes in a tremendous position to grow and succeed. The addition of Sammy Watkins to pair with Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill, Kareem Hunt, and Chris Conley gives Mahomes one of the best offenses in the league.
If one quarterback is set to grow next year, it’ll be Mahomes with the Chiefs.
