Sam Darnold, New York Jets

Compared to Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold is much more of a quiet leader, a leader by example.

Darnold is charismatic, smart, and poised in big moments, but he’s got a gunslinger mentality.

I think the Jets were a great situation for him coming from USC where he operated a pro-style offense and he can really grow into a role here.

The Jets are excited about Darnold, but they can afford some patience here. They don’t need to rush into anything.

Darnold’s excessive turnovers in 2017 at USC raised some red flags about his ability to translate to the pro game, but he certainly has the talent needed to be a star in this league.

The Jets may look to work on cleaning up Darnold’s game before they throw him to the wolves. I don’t think he will start over Josh McCown on opening day, but he should be the starter in New York by midseason, or whenever they get a fifth or sixth loss.

Unless this team overachieves, they may push Darnold’s start date up a bit. He won’t sit all of 2018 in my opinion.
