A Chicago Bears 2019 NFL mock draft? Now? Hey, the draft season is never over. As the dust settles from 2018, fans are looking to next year.

GM Ryan Pace made it clear with this off-season that it’s no longer about next year. He wants to win now. It’s hard to blame him. His team has endured three losing seasons during his tenure. So far the ownership has remained patient with his approach but the seat is bound to grow hot if the Bears don’t start to show more progress. That’s why he opened up the checkbook in free agency, signing guys like Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel and Kyle Fuller to big deals.

Then he followed it up with what could end up being the best draft he’s had to date. Most agree he snared three instant impact players in Roquan Smith, James Daniels, and Anthony Miller. This Bears team looks head and shoulders better than the one that finished 5-11 last year. If health can prevail for once, an 8-8 season is not out of the question. Particularly if young quarterback Mitch Trubisky takes the next step.

Still, it feels like this team might be a year away. One more good draft from becoming a true contender in the NFC. So what might they need to do in order to get the rest of the way?

17. Chicago Bears

57. Everybody with eyes knows what the Bears’ biggest oversight was in 2018. They failed to adequately help their edge rush position. To this point, their biggest addition is Aaron Lynch, a cheap free agent who bottomed out in San Francisco. He has 2.5 sack in two years. Everything hinges on whether Vic Fangio can revive who he was as a rookie. Leonard Floyd is coming off a knee injury. Sam Acho is over 30. Rookie Kylie Fitts is a 6th round pick. Not a lot of juice in that orange.
It’s no surprise they go there with this pick, especially with no 2nd rounder to fall back on. Montez Sweat has that 3-4 linebacker look with athleticism and incredible length. His ability to not just shed but throw blockers away is tantalizing. He had some disciplinary issues at Michigan State, worked his way back up through JUCO before notching 10.5 sacks in 2017 for Mississippi State. He represents everything the Bears need but don’t have.
. EDGE. Mississippi State. Montez Sweat . 17. player
