4th Round:  Nick Nelson (CB, Wisconsin) – C

Nelson would’ve been worth the 4th rounder here a couple months ago. That was before he suffered a knee injury during the pre-draft process. One that could threaten to land him on the PUP list to start the season. He’s a tough, physical player. Not overly big but disciplined. Lacks ball skills. It’s a lot to overcome.

5th Round:  Maurice Hurst (DT, Michigan) – A

This was the best pick of the draft for Oakland by a wide margin. Maurice Hurst should’ve been a 1st rounder. He was the most explosive interior pass rusher in the draft, and it wasn’t close. Sadly a medical discovery involving his heart came at a brutal time, scaring teams away. Word is he should be good. If so, AFC West QBs should get less comfortable.

5th Round:  Johnny Townsend (P, Florida) – C+

Oakland has a long history of success with punters. No doubt they’re hoping for more of the same with Townsend. He certainly has the part of leg strength nailed down. When his form and technique are right, he can send up some boom shots. He hasn’t learned to do it consistently though. That may come with more time.

6th Round:  Azeem Victor (ILB, Washington) – D

It’s hard to get a gauge on this pick. Once upon a time, Victor looked like a good player at Washington. He’s got good size and athletic traits. That seems like ages ago. Since he’s incurred multiple suspensions and also continues to suffer from weight concerns. This speaks of major discipline issues. Granted, that seems to be a Raiders pastime but still.

7th Round:  Marcell Ateman (WR, Oklahoma State) – A-

Ateman was overshadowed by his teammate James Washington at OK State but it’s curious why he fell so far. The kid has good size, decent hands, and some vertical ability. He shows body control, strength and an ability to go get the football in 50/50 situations. Blur the footage and he resembles Brandon Marshall. He’s a bit on the older side but this is still good value.
