2018 NFL Draft rumor: Could the Cleveland Browns take Baker Mayfield first overall? That is the latest rumor floating around…

The Cleveland Browns are on the clock, and one player that is reportedly not out of the running for the top overall pick is Heisman winner Baker Mayfield.

Mayfield has sort of been an afterthought when discussing the number one pick, more of a pipe dream for Browns fans who want him than anything else.

But now, it seems like there’s some smoke billowing out of Cleveland that is too much to ignore.

There’s always a lot of misinformation thrown around prior to the NFL Draft, but a lot of times the closer you get to the draft, the more reasonable or even truthful the information can be.

I remember last year around this time, Peter Schrager was reporting that the Carolina Panthers really wanted Christian McCaffrey with their top pick. Most everyone felt like that was a smokescreen until a number of other people with Panthers sources started reporting the very same thing.

If three different people with connections to the Browns are saying Mayfield is in the discussion to be the top overall pick, when no one was talking about it before, I think there’s reason enough to believe it could be true.

Therefore, it’s important to look at what kind of a scenario the Browns would face if they were to draft Mayfield number one overall.

Would they still look to Bradley Chubb with the fourth overall pick? If the Giants take Chubb, would Cleveland then take Saquon Barkley, and pair him with Mayfield?

I don’t think Mayfield would need much time to get out onto the field in Cleveland, and they would be able to use Barkley right away as well.

That could be a recipe for instant impact in John Dorsey’s first draft class with the team, so keep an eye on this as we progress toward Thursday.
