New York Jets reportedly down to Baker Mayfield, Josh Rosen
The New York Jets are taking a quarterback with the third overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Will it be Baker Mayfield or Josh Rosen?
The New York Jets are going to be taking a quarterback with the third overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, but which one?
As of right now, it seems like the two most likely quarterbacks to be picked first overall are Josh Allen and Sam Darnold, with the latter being slightly in the lead.
We don’t know exactly what’s going to happen with that top pick less than three days away from the draft, but the Jets seem comfortable picking between Josh Rosen or Baker Mayfield with the third overall pick.
With the New York Giants unlikely to trade the second overall pick, the Jets should have the opportunity to grab one of the top two players at the quarterback position on their draft board.
According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, there’s some support in the organization for Rosen, but ‘key people’ like Mayfield.
Whatever decision the Jets make, they are going to have a pretty good situation at the quarterback position with a rookie learning from Josh McCown.
Johnny Manziel’s recent comments about how McCown operated as a professional — why he has stuck in the league for as long as he has — have stuck with me.
Whatever rookie gets the chance to attach to McCown’s hip and learn from him for a year is going to find out what it takes to be a professional and how to truly work your way into a prominent role, both in the locker room and on the field.

I could see either Rosen or Mayfield being a perfect fit for that Jets organization, but there are some who feel that Rosen’s political beliefs (unfortunately) could factor into his not being drafted by the team.
The interesting nugget I’ve heard in recent weeks is that Rosen has been given a strong endorsement by Jedd Fisch, who worked with him at UCLA. Fisch and Jets offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates.
Fisch and Bates go back a decade in 2008 when they worked with the Denver Broncos as assistants together, and then again in 2010 when they worked together in Seattle with the Seahawks.
While in Seattle, Bates was the offensive coordinator and Fisch was the team’s quarterbacks coach.
Fisch was the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, and interim head coach at UCLA this past season before taking a job this offseason with the Los Angeles Rams.
There’s no doubt Fisch and Bates remain tight, and if the Jets’ offensive coordinator is Rosen’s biggest advocate, that could play a huge role in their decision making.
