New York Jets mock draft: Finding a franchise quarterback

3 (104th overall): Dorance Armstrong, EDGE, Kansas

The Jets need some juice off the edge, and I think in the fourth round, Armstrong would be a really nice value for them.

After a big sophomore season where he racked up 10 sacks, Armstrong had a down year in 2017. It wasn’t that his play really dropped off, but obviously offenses keyed in on stopping him.

He does know Baker Mayfield pretty well, and if you haven’t seen the infamous Oklahoma vs. Kansas game from 2017, it’s worth watching the highlights/recap.

Warning: You may see some crotch grabbing.

Armstrong isn’t a prototype edge defender but I think for the Jets, he would provide a boost in their pass rush presence and certainly in the fourth round, you can’t ask for better than that.

I view him as a player with starter potential and he could fit really well in Todd Bowles’ defense.

Draft Recap

The Jets, in this scenario, come away with Baker Mayfield, Braden Smith, and Dorance Armstrong. It’s not what Jets had anticipated a couple of months ago when they had multiple second round picks as well as the sixth overall pick in the draft.

That said, they get their quarterback, and that’s really all that matters at this point. The Jets overachieved a little bit last year, so if the supporting cast put in place a season ago along with the big money free agents that were brought in continue to develop, this team could make a little nois in the AFC East.

I’m not saying they’ll come out and win it this year, but you probably won’t be able to pencil this game in as an easy ‘W’ anymore. With Mayfield, I think the Jets could ascend fairly quickly.
