The Denver Broncos are expected to sign free agent QB Case Keenum when the new league year opens. We grade the signing…

The Denver Broncos decided to be the first team to take a dive into the 2018 NFL free agency pool at the quarterback position, signing former Vikings quarterback Case Keenum to a deal that will reportedly be for two years, $36 million.

Denver’s two-year deal with Keenum reportedly won’t prevent them from taking a quarterback with the fifth overall pick, though their options are definitely open.

Official contract details haven’t been reported, but compared to some of the other deals at the position that have been signed, this one looks like something of a bargain.

Signing grade: B+

There are a couple of reasons I like this signing for the Broncos, and there are also reasons I’m not a huge fan of it.

First, here’s why I didn’t give this signing an ‘A’ grade…

If the Broncos plan on taking a player with the 5th overall pick at the quarterback position, this is a lot of money to spend on an insurance policy. I don’t like the idea of a player that costs this much sitting on the bench, or a player you take with a top five pick to be sitting on the bench.

That doesn’t appeal to me for a team that constantly preaches it will not rebuild.

Why I like this move for the Broncos is because Keenum was truly one of the best players available based on last season.

He finished second in the NFL in completion percentage, and despite not starting all 16 games in the regular season, he had 22 touchdown passes compared to just seven interceptions.

The Broncos won all five games last year where the quarterback’s rating was above an 85. The average rating in their 11 losses? 61.6.

I feel like the Broncos are a quarterback away from at least contending for an AFC West title, and this move could pay nice dividends for them.
