The Chicago Bears signed Allen Robinson to a free agent deal, giving Mitch Trubisky a true number one receiver to get the ball to…

While you were sleeping in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, the NFL free agency dominos started falling, none bigger than the Chicago Bears getting wide receiver Allen Robinson from the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Robinson’s deal is reportedly for three years, and worth $42 million in total money with a $25 million guarantee.

So for the Bears, it’s essentially a two-year pact with Robinson, and then ‘we’ll see’ after year two.

This is a great deal for Chicago, even with Robinson coming off of a torn ACL. The Bears have a lot of injured receivers coming back this year, and now with Robinson in the fray, they have a proven, true number one type at the position.

What they had hoped Kevin White would be, Robinson has already proven himself to be.

Prior to his injury, Robinson was ascending and looking like one of the best young receivers in the game. Still just 24, he is now going to have a nice chunk of change in his pocket by the time he’s 27, and will be able to cash in on the free agent market again at that point, still with some prime years left in him.

For the Bears, this is a relatively reasonable commitment for a player that has Pro Bowl potential. Specifically when you look at the importance of getting a guy that can be a go-to target for young quarterback Mitch Trubisky, this is a big win for them.

In addition to Robinson, the Bears have an intriguing couple of playmakers at running back in Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen, and a player they valued highly in last year’s draft at tight end, Adam Shaheen.

I don’t think the Bears are done adding players at the receiver position, either.

With White and Cameron Meredith also coming back next year, Chicago needs a slot type of player to come in and be an outlet on third downs. They could find that player through the draft, but there are some very good options left in free agency as well.

This is a nice first move by the Bears in free agency, surrounding their young quarterback with the best talent possible. I think Robinson is one of the best young players on the market, and they got him at a fairly team-friendly deal.
