The New York Jets have pulled off a pretty big shocker in free agency, getting cornerback Trumaine Johnson to come over from the Los Angeles Rams.
The deal was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Johnson was expected to sign with either the Oakland Raiders or San Francisco 49ers, so the Jets had to come in with an offer he couldn’t refuse.
It looks like that’s just what they did…
Earlier on Tuesday, the Jets signed quarterback Josh McCown to a one-year, $10 million contract. They have plenty of money to play with, and they have been diligent, working to make moves to get their roster ready for a run at the Patriots in the AFC East.
It might not be this year, but the Jets are making some interesting moves for some of the top young players on the market in addition to a player like McCown who turns 39 in July.

Johnson now joins McCown and Isaiah Crowell as unrestricted free agents set to join the Jets officially on Wednesday.
In six seasons with the Rams, Johnson racked up 18 interceptions and 67 passes broken up. He had 327 tackles in those six seasons and proved himself to be one of the best cornerbacks in the game.
Signing for $15 million per year at the age of 28 is great for Johnson, and the Jets are getting a guy who is probably in the prime three or four years of his career coming up if he can stay healthy.
Johnson was a high third round pick of the Rams out of Montana in the 2012 NFL Draft. He combines excellent ball skills with length and an ability to shut down an entire side of the field.
New York’s defensive backfield already has two promising young players in safeties Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye, and with their cap space, they could still be interested in bringing back Morris Claiborne as well.
