Allen Robinson, San Francisco 49ers a free agency match
The Jacksonville Jaguars will reportedly not tag Allen Robinson, making him a free agent. The San Francisco 49ers are a logical match…
The wins just keep on coming for the San Francisco 49ers, who traded a measly second round draft pick for Jimmy Garoppolo at last year’s trade deadline, got an extension done with their new franchise quarterback, won a coin toss at the Scouting Combine for the ninth overall pick in the draft, and now the news that the Jacksonville Jaguars won’t franchise tag wide receiver Allen Robinson.
Robinson, who missed most of last season with a knee injury, was reportedly informed on Tuesday that he would not be tagged.
I’m sure he was thrilled.
Two years ago, Robinson racked up 1,400 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns, en route to becoming one of the league’s top up-and-coming wideouts. His numbers took a dip in 2016 as the Jaguars and Blake Bortles also regressed.
It was expected that Robinson would have a huge bounce-back year in 2017, but that obviously didn’t happen.
Now, at 24 years of age, Robinson is in a very rare position for a star player in today’s NFL. He’s about to become a free agent with the ability to sign probably two big money contracts before his career is over.

With his knee injury, the guaranteed money or overall price could go down a bit, but there’s no question that Robinson will get paid and the San Francisco 49ers have both the need for a true number one receiver, as well as the cap space to throw a big contract at Robinson.
Kyle Shanahan has his ‘Matt Ryan’ in San Francisco now. He needs a ‘Julio Jones’. Robinson is probably the best possible player they could have asked for, and with no second round draft choice due to the Garoppolo trade, this type of move makes sense.
All of a sudden, things would be looking up in San Francisco pretty rapidly.
Acquiring the services of Robinson would give them a true number one type at the position, along with a great number two in Pierre Garçon, and a budding slot receiver in Trent Taylor. The Niners also have a playmaker at tight end in George Kittle.
There will be multiple suitors for Robinson’s services, but he’s in a rare position where a team that could be the best possible fit is also the team that has some of the most money to spend in free agency.
Win-win.
