2018 NFL Scouting Combine: Key quarterback measurements
2018 NFL Scouting Combine: Taking a look at some of the key quarterback measurements at the Combine, including Lamar Jackson, Josh Rosen, and Baker Mayfield…
Before the players even take the field for drills at the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine, measurements can help teams differentiate players and help measure their athleticism and physical abilities inch for inch, pound for pound.
One position group that everyone typically likes to over-analyze in terms of physical measurables is the quarterback position.
The NFL has definitely had a ‘prototype’ size in the past, but anymore, it seems like you can have a great quarterback of basically any shape or size.
Still, these are interesting numbers to look at. Here are some of the top players at the position and their official Combine measurements:
Lamar Jackson, Louisville
Height: 6’2 2/8″
Weight: 216 pounds
Hand: 9 1/2 inches
Reaction: This is a really good measurement from Jackson. I believe it was Bill Polian who said Jackson was short or something like that, which as we can see just is not true. Jackson is 6-3 when he’s wearing cleats, and has a solid overall frame. At 216 pounds, his frame is perfectly fine to me.
Nine inches is also a pretty universal ‘minimum’ for the hand size, so that 9.5 number is also good for him.
Josh Rosen, UCLA
Height: 6’4″
Weight: 226 pounds
Hand: 9 7/8 inches
Reaction: Rosen is just about the prototypical size for a quarterback. You could get nit-picky that his weight should be up a little but, but that would be nit-picky. Rosen has a good overall frame, great hand size, and this is a win for him.
Sam Darnold, USC
Height: 6’3 3/8″
Weight: 221 pounds
Hand: 9 3/8 inches

Reaction: There’s nothing wrong with this measurement for Darnold. He’s got pretty ideal size when it comes to the quarterback position, average hand size compared to other former first round quarterbacks…This is a good check-in for Darnold.
Josh Allen, Wyoming
Height 6’4 7/8″
Weight: 237 pounds
Hand: 10 1/8 inches
Reaction: Allen’s height/weight/hand size is elite. This is one of the reasons why some feel like he will be the top pick in the draft. He is built like the ideal quarterback — not too tall, but right at the top of the ‘ideal’ height listing. He’s not too bulky for his height, but also doesn’t have a wiry frame for being 6-foot-5. His hand size — over 10 inches — is a fantastic number.
This is not unexpected because Allen checked in at the Senior Bowl, but this is a big deal for him.
Mason Rudolph, Oklahoma State
Height: 6’4 5/8″
Weight: 235 pounds
Hand: 9 1/8 inches
Reaction: Rudolph has ideal measurables, similar to those of Josh Allen when it comes to height and weight, but his hands are an entire inch smaller. That’s interesting to me. I never saw any huge problem with Rudolph’s hand size at Oklahoma State, but that could be part of the reason he struggles some with velocity.
Overall, I think this is a good overall measurement, though his hands are smaller than expected.
