Minnesota Vikings are perfect spot for Trey Burton
The Minnesota Vikings would be the perfect landing spot for Trey Burton in 2018 NFL Free Agency. We explore the fit between the two sides…
Trey Burton is going to be remembered in NFL history as the player that threw a touchdown pass to Nick Foles on fourth down in one of the most iconic plays in Super Bowl history.
He’s also set to make some nice money as an unrestricted free agent.
Burton, who is just 26 years old, is a very interesting offensive weapon and a player that can help any NFL team in a variety of ways as a receiver, carrying the ball out of the backfield, or even throwing the ball.
He was recruited by Urban Meyer at Florida to play some quarterback, and ended up playing a lot of different positions for the Gators on offense.
This jack-of-all-trades will have a nice market in free agency, but perhaps no better fit than the one in Minneapolis.

The Vikings hired former Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo as their new offensive coordinator, so Burton will unquestionably be a scheme fit in Minnesota. He would also give the Vikings a dynamic pass catching threat at the tight end position, where Kyle Rudolph is much more of a traditional in-line player at the position.
This is not an indictment of Rudolph’s skills, but the Vikings have a window here where they can afford a player like Burton because the remainder of their skill players on offense are already on a second contract or they are still on their rookie contract.
Burton is a player that can split out in the slot, move out wide, or line up pretty much anywhere and be a valuable chess piece. He may not want to join another team with an established TE1 like Rudolph in Minnesota, but the Vikings would have the money to give Burton a nice deal, and they are installing an offense that he is familiar with, and has excelled in.
I could see these two sides coming together on a deal, one that both expands Burton’s role and pays him what he has earned.
