Could Oklahoma Sooners tight end Mark Andrews be the most overrated player in the 2018 NFL Draft class right now? We examine…

Oklahoma Sooners tight end Mark Andrews is certainly one of the most decorated pass catchers at the tight end position in the 2018 NFL Draft, but has he been overrated as an NFL prospect?

It appears as though that might be the case.

Personally, I have seen Andrews as a top option at the position, specifically for his abilities as a receiver. He’s not a traditional in-line type of tight end, but he certainly has the size and length and athleticism to be a mismatch as a receiver.

But are his abilities as a blocker and inability to play in-line bad enough that teams are going to push him far down their boards?

Tony Pauline thinks that some teams could have Ian Thomas, Dallas Goedert, and Hayden Hurst among their top three tight ends, with Mike Gesicki close behind, but makes no mention of Andrews among the top tight end prospects.

This could mean that Andrews would be pushed into the second day of the draft, potentially as far down as round three.

Lance Zierlein thinks that there’s even a chance that Andrews could go day three, and cites a scout who called him a ‘big slot receiver’.

Ouch.

I have to say, this is something I would be surprised about.

It seems an appropriate comparison to the NFL for Andrews would be Coby Fleener, as Zierlein notes, but would that even be accurate if Andrews isn’t able to set the track on fire in the 40-yard dash like Fleener did in 2012?

Andrews racked up so many big plays at Oklahoma, it was easy for me to overlook his flaws but now I’m going to have to go back to the tape and look at what some of these evaluators are seeing.

If, indeed, he is a day three pick, it could mean that Andrews is a guy that I’ve had as the most overrated player in this year’s class by a mile.
