Josh Gordon’s contract situation with the Cleveland Browns
Taking a look at Josh Gordon’s contract situation with the Cleveland Browns, and what might happen with him in the 2018 offseason…
The Cleveland Browns are armed with the most cap space in the NFL in the 2018 offseason, and are set to have a huge impact on NFL free agency as a whole.
Even with $110 million in cap space, it’s not even going to cost the Browns $1 million to keep wide receiver Josh Gordon on the roster in 2018.
How is that possible?
Despite being acquired in the 2012 Supplemental Draft by the Browns, Gordon has only two accrued NFL seasons. Because of that fact, Gordon is set to be an exclusive rights free agent this offseason, which means he can negotiate with no one except for Cleveland.
Not only that, but the Browns’ tender for Gordon will check in somewhere around $540,000.

That will make him one of the most worthwhile bargains in the NFL this year.
Not that the Browns need the cap flexibility.
But in terms of roster flexibility and insurance in case something happens again with Gordon, this is great news for John Dorsey’s staff.
The Browns can now evaluate Gordon over the course of a full season, and he will again be a restricted free agent in 2019.
It’s hard to imagine a player of this caliber being under team control almost into his age 30 season, but that’s going to be the case with Gordon and the Browns, as his off-field decisions may have cost him dearly in terms of a huge NFL pay day.
For Gordon, this just means he’s going to have to maintain his focus on just getting better as a player and making plays on the field. It’s possible the Browns would reward him if he’s able to put together a full, clean season.
