Nick Foles: Getting cut by Jeff Fisher to Super Bowl MVP
Nick Foles has experienced the lowest of lows as an NFL player — getting cut by Jeff Fisher and the Rams — to the highest of highs, winning SB MVP…
Nick Foles has pretty much experienced it all as an NFL player.
He was a Pro Bowl selection with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013, his first stint with the team. That season included a game against the Oakland Raiders in which Foles threw an NFL-record tying seven — seven — touchdown passes with no interceptions and nearly 79 percent completion rate.
He’s now a Super Bowl champion and Super Bowl MVP despite not even being the primary starter on the 2017 Philadelphia Eagles, who were led most of the season by MVP candidate Carson Wentz.
So, Foles’ accolades as a football player are about as impressive as anyone, considering the short amount of time he’s even been a starting player in this league.
But Foles’ career hasn’t been all rosy. He has undoubtedly experienced the highest of highs, but he’s also gone through some really tough times as well.
Foles was once a member of the St. Louis and Los Angeles Rams, and his release from the team after a tough 2015 season was made a major spectacle on the HBO series Hard Knocks.
Fast forward not even two years later, and Foles has already spent a season with the Kansas City Chiefs and is on his second stint with the Philadelphia Eagles. He’s quickly become one of the NFL’s ‘journeyman’ quarterbacks and he’s the backup to a young hot shot in Carson Wentz, a player only to be used in case of emergency.
You never know when your number is going to be called, but Foles is a prime example of how to respond appropriately when it is.
After Wentz’s injury, Foles won every game he played in full (he and a number of other Eagles starters didn’t finish their week 17 matchup against Dallas) including the Super Bowl, a game in which he suggested a play call that will go down in history as one of the best, gutsiest calls ever.

I think it’s safe to say that Foles landed on his feet.
He will now be one of the most coveted quarterbacks in the NFL this offseason after his late-season run with the Eagles, which is not limited to his postseason performance. Foles played well in the regular season, including a four-touchdown performance against the New York Giants.
He’s got ‘Super Bowl MVP’ on his resumé now in addition to his Pro Bowl selection, and that record-tying performance in 2017. Since quarterbacks seem to be getting better with age, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Foles as one of the great bargains in the NFL this offseason considering what the Eagles would probably get for him in a trade after watching what the Patriots fetched for Jimmy Garoppolo (high second rounder).
Wherever Foles is playing next year, that team is getting a guy that’s pretty much done it all at this level, except go into a situation with a good team where he was ‘the guy’. He’s proven he can finish the job, now he’ll likely get the chance to prove he can do it over the course of an entire season again.
