2018 Senior Bowl: James Washington didn’t have the luxury of his buddy Mason Rudolph throwing him passes, but he still found ways to make plays…

We all know how prolific the duo of Mason Rudolph and James Washington has been at Oklahoma State the past couple of seasons. What we didn’t know is how those two would fare without the other.

As it turns out, Washington is going to be just fine.

In his first practice with the South roster at the 2018 Senior Bowl in Mobile, AL, Washington put on a clinic.

First and foremost though, we need to talk about his measurement…

Washington checked in at 5-foot-10 and change, 210 pounds roughly, or the size of a smaller running back. He doesn’t look like a number one receiver type on paper.

But then Washington’s wingspan number of nearly 34-inches came in, and all of a sudden it became abundantly clear why this is one of the best 50-50 catchers in the 2018 NFL Draft class.

Washington has the ability to win with quickness because of his stature, but the ability to dominate deep downfield because he has the arm length of a 6-foot-5 receiver.

Not only did Washington clear press coverage with ease, he showed a better ability to run routes than I thought he might (for whatever reason) and he also showed off his strong hands whether it was deep downfield, contested, or whatever.

Washington was getting himself open, creating separation, and making a major impression on day one.

It was such a strong impression that a representative for the Detroit Lions came running over to Washington after practice, pulled him aside, and chatted with him. Shortly after that, Drew Rosenhaus got Washington’s attention and called him over to the side of the field, where he told him he had the best practice of the day, and that he was really impressed.

Rosenhaus was not alone.

Washington’s performance on Tuesday was absolutely stellar, and even more so when you consider the fact that he didn’t exactly have top flight quarterback play all day long.

Overall, I thought it was a fantastic day for Washington and can’t wait to see how he builds on it on Wednesday.
