The intrigue for the 2018 Senior Bowl starts with the quarterback position and Heisman winner Baker Mayfield along with Josh Allen…

The 2018 Senior Bowl is loaded with intriguing storylines, starting with the quarterback position.

This year’s class features two potential top five draft picks in Oklahoma’ Baker Mayfield and Wyoming’s Josh Allen, both of whom could also be considered by the Cleveland Browns for the number one overall selection.

Incidentally, both players will be coached on the North roster by the Denver Broncos’ coaching staff.

The Broncos, coming off a 5-11 season, hold the fifth overall pick in the draft.

Food for thought…

The intrigue with both of these guys has so many layers.

For Josh Allen, it’s a chance to see him in a relatively controlled (but still very competitive) environment with some of the best players in the country. If you’re a Josh Allen defender, one of the main arguments as to why his production took such a dip in 2017 is because his supporting cast was terrible this past season.

Which, by the way, I was scolded on this website for writing prior to the start of the season, but I digress…

The North roster is loaded with talent at the skill positions and on the offensive line, so even though these guys will only be practicing together for three days, it’s the best group of players Allen will have ever worked with.

Perhaps it’ll be a little bit easier for him to be accurate when he has a clean pocket, or receivers that can get open consistently.

For Mayfield, the interesting thing to watch will be how quickly he adapts to a more pro-style offense, which includes taking snaps from center and deeper drops. We know what Mayfield is capable of as an athlete, and how poised he is under pressure. It will be a treat to watch him working — as with Allen — with some of the best players in the country.

The fact that the Broncos are coaching these two players seems significant. We already know the Broncos specifically requested Mayfield, and I’m guessing the same is true for Josh Allen.

If that’s the case, those two may be battling it out for the Broncos’ starting quarterback spot. They’ll get a chance to work with Bill Musgrave, who did exceptional work with Derek Carr in Oakland, as well as the Broncos’ new quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan, who has been working with Eli Manning for a long time.
