2018 NFL Head Coach Hire Grades: Who Did/Didn’t Do Well?
By Erik Lambert
Chicago Bears: Matt Nagy
If nothing else the Bears deserve some credit for being decisive in their decision. GM Ryan Pace could’ve taken his time to ensure he exhausted every avenue. However he did his research, got his references and knew his guy almost immediately. That was Matt Nagy. It’s certainly an inspired choice. Nagy is fresh off getting Alex Smith to his third Pro Bowl since 2013 in Kansas City. That bodes well for quarterback Mitch Trubisky. He also comes from the Andy Reid coaching tree which has proven fertile ground in the past as Ron Rivera and John Harbaugh can attest.
Nagy also scored some extra points early by convincing defensive coordinator Vic Fangio to stay on board with the team. This certainly helps matters. At the same time there is still reason for caution. Nagy is young at 39 years old and he’s only been a coordinator for two years. Even then he only called plays for part of this season. He’s never worked under any other coaches so it’s hard to know for sure how he’ll operate out from under the Reid umbrella.
