Bill O’Brien returning to Texans is best for DeShaun Watson
The best decision for the Houston Texans’ future is to keep Bill O’Brien. He found a system that works for DeShaun Watson…
For a couple of years now, it seems like the Houston Texans have been sitting on the fence in making the decision of whether or not to fire head coach Bill O’Brien.
They will apparently retain him again for 2018, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who writes that while O’Brien is likely to be back, there are ‘issues’ to be worked out with his contract.
Here’s Schefter’s official report:
The Houston Texans and general manager Rick Smith seemed to put all of their eggs in the Brock Osweiler basket two offseasons ago, which put the future of O’Brien in limbo because he’s been expected to make the playoffs and win games there.
How is he supposed to do that without a viable option at quarterback?
Well, despite everything that happened in the Texans’ crazy 2016 season, they made the playoffs and won a playoff game with Osweiler, so O’Brien was retained.

After another crazy offseason that included the unloading of Osweiler and trading up for DeShaun Watson, the Texans finally appeared to have some clarity and direction for the team going forward, but rumors of a poor relationship between coach and management persisted.
Watson was putting up some kind of video game numbers in a system O’Brien designed for him prior to his ACL injury, and with the loss of Watson came the loss of the Texans’ season.
Well, the loss of Watson and a number of other key players, including J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus…
The Texans were apparently deliberating whether or not to fire O’Brien at the end of this season, but that doesn’t appear to be the case any longer. It seems O’Brien will return, and along with him, the return of Watson.
That is the best case scenario for the Texans at this point, keeping continuity in the offensive system for their young quarterback, at least for another year to prove they can put it all together.
The one that may not return in Houston is general manager Rick Smith, who signed Brock Osweiler without even a face-to-face meeting. Things could take a pretty drastic turn in Houston but not like many expected them to.
The great news is, Watson will have O’Brien, whom he prefers, coaching him next year.
