New England Patriots made a huge mistake trading Jimmy Garoppolo
The New England Patriots aren’t necessarily known for their false moves in terms of player personnel, but trading Jimmy Garoppolo was a huge mistake…
The New England Patriots are quite possibly well on their way to yet another Super Bowl title. They have been a dynasty in the NFL for the better part of two decades.
But apparently, they didn’t feel the timeline was right for Jimmy Garoppolo to be their future at quarterback, so they traded him to the San Francisco 49ers for a second round pick.
In a league driven by quarterback play, this trade was a colossal mistake by the Patriots.
Garoppolo is already proving to be a phenomenal leader for the 49ers, and looks like one of the biggest steals in recent memory.
The Patriots themselves traded a first round pick last year for Brandin Cooks, but Garoppolo they settled on a second rounder?
Perhaps New England was doing Garoppolo a favor for his always being a good sport about being Tom Brady’s backup, but this league is a business, and winning is the priority.
The Patriots must feel Brady is going to play until he’s 50, because parting with a player the caliber of Garoppolo is something that no other team in the NFL has the luxury of doing. Especially for just a second round draft pick.

Between his time in New England and San Francisco, Garoppolo is 5-0 as a starter in the NFL, and that’s not just a meaningless win-loss stat that he didn’t he didn’t earn. Garoppolo has been a difference maker in a big way.

Over the past two seasons in limited action, Garoppolo is completing over 68 percent of his passes with seven touchdowns compared to just two interceptions, and obviously has helped his teams win games.
Last season, Garoppolo filled in admirably for the suspended Tom Brady, and would have had even more playing time were it not for an injury he suffered in his second start of the season.
The 49ers were primed for the 2nd overall pick in the draft, but Garoppolo has come in and, since he’s been in the starting lineup, the Niners haven’t lost.
At the age of 26, there’s no question Garoppolo’s best days are yet ahead of him. He’s spent the past few years learning what it takes to win a championship day in and day out from the best organization in football in terms of results. He’s learned those habits and is bringing them into an organization with a rich history of winning, and he’s getting them on the right track quickly.
The Patriots aren’t immune to making mistakes, and they have certainly made their share. But they have mostly won through and despite their mistakes, because of how good Tom Brady is, and how good he makes everyone around him.
Eventually, Brady won’t be there. Now, when Brady’s not there, neither will Garoppolo, and that is the biggest mistake the Patriots could have possibly made.
