By now the Jeff Fisher rumors are rampant across Chicago Bears social media and there is a genuine panic that the team is considering it.

All still have a fresh memory of what happened with Fisher and the Rams. He goes 31-45 during his time there, gets replaced the next year by Sean McVay who is now 10-4 and headed to the playoffs. If that’s not an indictment of Fisher, not much is. So why in the world would the Bears ever consider him? Well it likely starts with his connections to the organization.

Fisher was a defensive back for the team during the early 1980s. He briefly became a defensive assistant coach for them in 1985 before moving on. Over the years Fisher has since cultivated a strong reputation in the NFL community. He’s widely respected within league circles in spite of his questionable coaching record over the past decade.

It’s no secret that the McCaskey family knows Fisher and holds him in high esteem. Would that be enough to pressure GM Ryan Pace into making him the replacement for John Fox?

Fisher would basically be just another Fox to fans

One of the problems that Bears fans have with Fox is the general lack of discipline his players continue to exhibit. To say nothing of the ongoing problems with a conservative, predictable offense that fails to put up points. This is basically the exact problems that haunted Fisher for much of his tenure with the Rams. From 2012 to 2016 his teams never ranked higher than 21st in points scored or 23rd in total yards.

So what about this hire can be considered an upgrade in any way over when the Bears already have? Rest assured this is not the sort of hire that will get fans in any way excited about 2018. If anything it will put Pace squarely in the crosshairs. This next coaching hire figures to be his legacy on the line. The coach who joins Trubisky to lead the Bears back to prominence.

Is he really going to sign off on another outdated coach who’d be joining his third team and turns 60-years old? That is a level of confusion that boggles the mind. Fisher was a good coach at one point in time, but it feels like the game has passed him by. The same as it has Fox. The Bears must evolves, not lean on old traditions.
