DeMarco Murray could be one of the top free agents available this offseason

Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Mularkey admitted Thursday that the team is currently carrying multiple starting running backs, and that could mean bad news for veteran DeMarco Murray.

Philadelphia had traded Murray after a disastrous season under Chip Kelly to the Titans for a mid-round draft pick, which they subsequently traded. Murray had been coming off a career-year with the Cowboys, but failed to produce in Philadelphia.

Despite adding Murray the Titans added insurance with reigning Heisman winner Derrick Henry out of Alabama in the second round.

Both moves have paid off for Tennessee with the duo combining to rush for over 1,700 yards last season. Their success has carried over into 2017, but the Titans may not be able to retain both their star backs.

Murray is set to turn 30-years-old this offseason, the age at which most running backs begin to decline. He’s set to earn $6.5 million next season with no cap penalty should the Titans move on. They can find a much cheaper option on the market for a backup running back such as Dion Lewis, Jeremy Hill, or Carlos Hyde.

Tennessee is set to go into the offseason with $45 million in salary cap, but they’ll have DaQuan Jones, Avery Williamson, and Eric Decker among others on the open market. They’ll have the opportunity to add a wide receiver to their core with Terrelle Pryor, Sammy Watkins, and Alshon Jeffrey expected to highlight the class.

While not a flashy name, former Vanderbilt star Jordan Matthews could be a match for the Titans.

It would behoove Tennessee to add another safety and potentially some help on the offensive line with Marcus Mariota’s injury history.
