David Sills V, one of the most interesting stories in football
West Virginia wide receiver David Sills V, a former high school quarterback, has blossomed into a big time playmaker at wide receiver…
It’s not every day a seventh grade kid gets a scholarship offer from USC after posting a highlight video on YouTube, but that’s exactly what happened to David Sills V eight years ago.
When Lane Kiffin was still the head coach of the USC Trojans football program, he saw a video of this 13-year old kid playing quarterback, and felt like he was good enough at the time to offer a scholarship.
Despite many wondering whether or not that was even a legal move by a college, to offer a seventh grade kid a scholarship, Sills accepted the offer and the player and school had a verbal agreement.
Despite his dream as a young man to eventually become the starting quarterback of USC, Sills’ career path to football stardom has gone a completely different route.
He was recruited by a number of schools coming out of high school, and despite his offer from USC from many years prior, Sills ended up committing to play football all the way across the country at West Virginia, who turned him from a dual-threat quarterback into a wide receiver.
By the end of the 2015 season, his first as a Mountaineer, it was clear that there was some potential there for Sills, who only caught seven passes but a pair for touchdowns.

Still, the dream to play the quarterback position lingered, so he transferred back closer to his home in California to play for El Camino Community College.
Hoping to impress division one schools with his quarterback ability again, Sills did something extremely unconventional and re-committed to West Virginia after a year away from the program.
The Mountaineers were getting quarterback Will Grier, formerly of the Florida Gators, and Sills decided that the best option for him would be to go back and fully commit to the wide receiver position with West Virginia.
What an incredible decision that has turned out to be.
On a very talented group of wide receivers at WVU, Sills has had a major breakout season, leading division one players with 18 receiving touchdowns. He’s averaging over 16 yards per reception, and is proving to be one of the country’s top red zone targets.
He made one of the sickest catches you will ever see in the red area:
I don’t know where this guy is going to be a year from now, whether the NFL or back in college, but right now, it’s hard to argue with the type of production he’s putting up. He’s showing that not only is he effective as a big body in the red zone, but he can make plays after the catch and has some serious speed in the open field.
It will be interesting to see, if Will Grier leaves for the NFL, what Sills would do. I think their futures are somewhat tied together, and if Grier returns so will Sills.
As of right now, I think Sills has shown enough this season to warrant NFL consideration, but will his stock be high enough to get him to leave school?
Time will tell.
