How big of a deal are Baker Mayfield’s antics against Kansas?
As it relates to the 2018 NFL Draft, how big of a deal are Baker Mayfield’s antics against Kansas? Could this cost him come draft time?
Baker Mayfield has gone from something of an NFL Draft longshot to being the hottest name at the quarterback position for 2018. But that doesn’t mean he’s without faults.
Mayfield has had history of off-field antics that could cost him come time for final 2018 evaluations, and some may point to his actions against Kansas this past weekend as reason enough not to draft him.
Here is the clip currently floating around:
As someone that young Oklahoma and football fans in general look up to, it’s certainly not the best look for Mayfield. But it isn’t the first time I’ve seen a quarterback shout f-bombs on live television. Even the greatest of all time — Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, etc. — have been seen firing off f-bombs.
The problem people have here is probably more with Mayfield grabbing his crotch region, which is obviously a bad look for he as a prospective professional football player as well as the Oklahoma football program.
Mayfield issued an apology after the game for his actions, stating that he got caught up in a heated moment of competition, but I don’t think he’s the only one at fault here, either.
Guys don’t generally lose their cool like this unless they are being provoked, and that was clearly the case from before even the start of the game with Mayfield and the opposing Kansas team.

Does this affect him going forward with NFL teams?
If his stock was rising prior to this whole ordeal against Kansas, I don’t think it will change all that much. Mayfield has been a polarizing player anyway, and this type of thing could be seen almost as a competitive fire that teams don’t want him to lose.
Obviously, he can’t lose his cool and cost his team, but to give him credit, he did wait until he was on the sideline.
Mayfield is a leader for his team and the players around him obviously love and respect him. He’s got a command of the Oklahoma offense that has his team in position to compete for a college football playoff spot, and his crazy success through the past few seasons will likely lead to a high draft status.
He will just need to be reminded to not make inappropriate gestures from time to time.
