The Philadelphia Eagles are looking like the best team in the NFL, or at least the hottest team. It genuinely feels like they can do no wrong.

In four of their last six games they’ve beaten opponents by 23 or more points. They’re rolling on offense and on defense. Much of the credit must go to GM Howie Roseman who did a remarkable job tearing down and rebuilding this team in the wake of the Chip Kelly era. At the same time Doug Pederson deserves a lot of the credit. A big reason being his incredible job constructing his coaching staff. So good a job in fact that it could be raided by other teams next year.

As things stand there are three names on the staff who are getting head coaching buzz. Jim Schwartz is running a defense ranked 10th in the NFL and has forced 20 turnovers. They’re best in the league at stopping the run and playing an attitude that Schwartz himself is known for. People remember his time in Detroit. Though it didn’t end well, the man did take a team that went 0-16 in 2008 to the playoffs by 2011. Combined with his recent success, he might earn a second chance.

Frank Reich and John DeFilippo praised for work with Carson Wentz

If that weren’t enough, two men on the offensive side are getting even more attention. Offensive coordinator Frank Reich and quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo have both seen their names mentioned more and more over the past few weeks as quarterback Carson Wentz continues hurtling towards a possible MVP award.

Both men have deep backgrounds either player or coaching quarterbacks. In the case of Reich it’s both. He was arguably the best backup in NFL history and has had a good deal of success as a coach in San Diego and now Philadelphia. It feels like the time is right to get his shot. DeFilippo is somewhat of a rising star. He mentored some successful young QBs over the past decade including Mark Sanchez in 2009, Derek Carr in 2014 and now Wentz.

There is a good chance at least one of those three men could be mined by another team for their head coaching position in 2018. Perhaps even two given how uncertain the field is looking at this stage. It will be interesting to see how the franchise responds. For the time being though, they have their sights set on the Super Bowl
