During the first half of his tenure as commissioner of the NFL, Roger Goodell could do no wrong. The league was thriving, making making and fans were eating it up in record numbers. Over the past year though his prestige has taken some serious body blows. Among them including the national anthem protests sparked by Colin Kaepernick, the failure to get out in front on the concussion/CTE issues regarding player safety and most recently his harsh stances regarding player discipline. Chief among them the suspensions for Tom Brady and Ezekiel Elliott.

This has forced him into confrontations with two of the most powerful owners in the league in Robert Kraft and Jerry Jones. Suddenly a man who looked bulletproof barely six months ago has overseen one of the most tumultuous periods in the NFL since the strikes of the 1980s. It remains to be seen whether he’ll be able to hold onto his job and pull the league out of the mud. Fans aren’t happy. Players aren’t happy. That has to change.
