Mystique of the Legion of Boom

It feels like a lifetime ago when the Seattle Seahawks defense single-handedly shut down the greatest offense in NFL history and practically won the Super Bowl on their own. The problem is most great defenses tend to burn out fast. Unlike offenses they don’t have a singular position like quarterback that’s easy to build around. Once certain pieces start wearing down, things go south in a hurry. It seems that process accelerated in 2017.

Seattle is still 5th in points allowed and 12th in yards, but compared to even two years ago that is a steep drop in productivity. They’ve allowed over 30 points twice this season, one of them at home against a rookie quarterback. Richard Sherman and Cliff Avril are already done for the season. Kam Chancellor appears set to join them. The old guard that made the Legion of Boom one of the all-time great defenses are passing into twilight and it’s depressing.
