Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield continued his candidacy as the top quarterback in the country with a convincing win over TCU…

Everybody’s favorite question to argue about, especially when it deals with college football, is which quarterback is the best quarterback? I think at this point in time, you’d have to give that one to Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield, who continued his phenomenal season against sixth ranked TCU on Saturday.

Mayfield has gone from just a great ‘college’ quarterback to a legitimate threat to be one of the top two or three quarterbacks selected in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Many felt like those top three positions this year were held by guys like Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, and Josh Allen, but we’ve seen a completely different story play out on the field this year and Mayfield has — to me — been inarguably the most consistent player of the bunch.

Completing over 71 percent of his passes this season, and over 66 percent against TCU, Mayfield has been the key reason why Oklahoma is in such good position to make the college football playoff, and he proves doubters wrong by making big time NFL-caliber plays every single week.

The detractors of Mayfield consistently bring up the same arguments.

He doesn’t play in an NFL-style offense…

He isn’t tall enough…

He’s just a good ‘college’ quarterback…

All of those things may be true, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that Mayfield shows NFL-caliber intangibles, specifically in leading his team on the field.

More from NFL Mocks

For Mayfield to get better like he has in four seasons as a college football starter is pretty wild. He had put up phenomenal numbers prior to this, his final season at Oklahoma, but the numbers he’s putting up this year can’t be ignored when you start looking at the fact that he rarely turns the football over, and he can make throws to any level of the field with his arm strength.

Mayfield is accurate with the football, and doesn’t lock into his first read. He and the rest of the Oklahoma offense absolutely buried the sixth ranked team in the country on Saturday, scoring 38 points in the first half. Mayfield accounted for three of those touchdowns, all passing.

The way this guy leads his team on the field and the passion and fire he has for the game will be key reasons why an NFL team — or multiple teams — fall in love with him. You can’t teach a guy to be passionate, and as we’ve seen in the case of Jay Cutler, you can’t pay them to be passionate either.

Mayfield loves the game, he loves to win, and he understands his role. He understands the rhythm of the Oklahoma offense and he plays the game of football like he speaks his primary language. It just comes so easily, so naturally.

With Mayfield progressing every single week, the NFL Draft hype will continue to rise.
