Jared Goff vs. Carson Wentz is the game that NFL fans didn’t realize they wanted to see at the start of the 2017 seasons. Such is the new reality.

The top two picks of the 2016 draft looked like rookies most of the time last years. They made mistakes and weren’t always precise. Yet throughout that process they were learning. Everybody knew if the Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles executed their 2017 offseason plans well, there was a chance both could end up thriving this year. That is exact what happened.

This week showcased all of it with both players throwing four touchdown passes and leading their teams to 51 points scored against teams that had a top ranked defense from last year. The Rams and Eagles are now the unquestioned best in the NFC and it looks like on a collision course for the conference championship game this January.

Could Goff vs. Wentz end up being the next Brady vs. Manning?

People like to say that anthem protests are the biggest reason for sagging TV ratings. Truth be told that is only part of it. One part that is overlooked? The retirement of Peyton Manning. Ever since the “Sheriff” stepped away the game hasn’t quite adjusted to the void left behind. Nothing is missed more than his annual showdowns with fellow future Hall of Famer Tom Brady. That rivalry was must-see television and the league hasn’t been able to find one to replace it.

The subplots to a Goff vs. Wentz meeting are almost too easy. It’s the #1 pick vs. the #2 pick. East coast vs. West coast. The laid back Californian vs. the country-grown North Dakotan. The glitz and glamour of L.A. against the blue-collar history of Philly. Who wouldn’t pay money to see that matchup every year? There is a long way to go this season and things change fast in the NFL. Nonetheless it appears the new guard of quarterbacks has begun to emerge and these two could lead the way.
