Cody O’Connell, OG, Washington St.

The Cowboys haven’t been the same dominant offensive line in 2017 that they were in 2016. While All-Pro’s Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick, and Zack Martin are still here, the other two spots have seemed to fluctuate. La’el Collins signed a lucrative short-term extension and has been slowly improving at right tackle.

More from Mock Drafts

He’ll likely need more time at the position to develop into the players the Cowboys envision him being. At left guard, however, questions remain. It has been a revolving door between Jonathan Cooper, Chaz Green, and Byron Bell and is the weak link in this unit. If Chaz Green can’t step up and claim the spot, the Cowboys have to look at the draft for his replacement.

While it’s certainly possible he’s not available in the fourth round, Cody O’Connell would be an excellent addition to this offensive line. Standing at 6’7” and nearly 370 pounds, O’Connell is an imposing mountain of a man. His size doesn’t hurt his ability, however, as he does a nice job in pass protection and isn’t easily swayed from his blocks. He moves surprisingly well and demonstrates good footwork.

Washington State’s success has put him more into the spotlight, but his size may have some questioning his mobility at the next level. If he’s here, the Cowboys have the resources and coaching available to evolve him into the best player he can be. His inclusion may give the Cowboys the long-term answer they are looking for.
