During the last off-season, the Cowboys lost four big contributors in their secondary to free agency, forcing an immediate rebuild at both cornerback and safety. Barry Church went to Jacksonville, Morris Claiborne signed with the Jets, J.J. Wilcox took off to Tampa Bay, and Brandon Carr signed with the Ravens. The rebuild seemingly took over the Cowboys’ 2017 draft plans, selecting three cornerbacks and a safety.

All have been and figure to be solid contributors for the future, including Jourdan Lewis who is primed to start sooner rather than later. While such an overhaul may seem finished, the Cowboys still need to add size and depth to the position. They have a solid foundation, but finding another top cornerback would help solidify the entire secondary.

Anthony Averett has long been ranked among the best in the 2018 draft class. With such a competitive class, however, it seems a lot of these talented defensive backs will slip down the draft. If Averett is there in the second, he’d be an absolute steal. Standing at 6’0”, Averett has proper height for the position that should help balance things on defense.

He is an explosive athlete with great burst and speed. He will need to add weight and play more physical, but his potential is limitless.
