Normally it wouldn’t be the biggest deal that a GM was attending a college football game. With Ryan Pace of the Chicago Bears though, it’s different.

Each of the past three 1st round picks the Bears have made involved players that Pace saw in person at one point or another during a season. It was most famously true of quarterback Mitch Trubisky. Pace attending the Sun Bowl between North Carolina and Stanford. He watch early mistakes by the kid and the gutty rally in the final minutes to almost force overtime if not for several drops by his receivers and a terrible missed block by the offensive line.

So a smart bettor would pinpoint the games that Pace visits in 2017 to get an idea on the players he’s likely to draft next April in 2018. That’s why the announcement that he was taking in the USC-Notre Dame tilt was so interesting.

With both he and top talent evaluator Champ Kelly in attendence, it’s clear the Bears are serious about this game. With good reason too. Based on current draft rankings this matchup could feature several players that would potentially solve some of the Bears’ biggest roster issues. Here are some names to note.

Equanimeous St. Brown (WR, Notre Dame)

The Bears are positively starved for wide receivers. Free agency and injuries have completely sapped the position this year, leaving few outside options for quarterback Mitch Trubisky. There is no doubt eyes will be on St. Brown. He’s considered one of the 2-3 best in the upcoming class. At 6’4″ he presents a big target, has good explosion, strong hands and runs savvy routes.

Mike McGlinchey (OT, Notre Dame)

Charles Leno Jr. and Bobby Massie haven’t been too bad at tackle for the Bears. Still one can safely say neither is a stud. There is no shame in seeking an upgrade. Mike McGlinchey could potentially be one. He’s big, strong, quick on his feet and understands how to open lanes for his backs. His pass protection has improved though his discipline can be inconsistent at times.

Quenton Nelson (OG, Notre Dame)

Not only is he the best guard in the 2018 class, he might be the best offensive lineman overall. There isn’t much to dislike about Quenton Nelson. He’s got size and good feet, shows strength in the ground game and a nasty streak in his blocking. His consistency without mistakes is what helps him stand out. Josh Sitton turns 32 next year. This could be his heir apparent.

Deontay Burnett (WR, USC)

St. Brown isn’t the only receiver to watch in that game. Deontay Burnett has established himself as the favorite target of top 2018 quarterback Sam Darnold. While he doesn’t have the same size of his counterpart, he makes up for it with speed, quickness and agility. He’s one of those types who may not be flashy but just always seems to be open.

Iman Marshall (CB, USC)

Something worth keeping in mind here. Prince Amukamara, Bryce Callahan and Kyle Fuller will all be free agents in 2018. Of course that could change with Pace being able to lock any of them up long-term if he wishes. At the same time it’s paints a clear picture that they might be looking for more cornerback help next year. Iman Marshall has what they like:  size, length, and press ability.
