People keep talking about Deshaun Watson and his breakout. That’s fair, but he hasn’t endured the difficult schedule Mitch Trubisky has.

The #2 overall pick has received a trial-by-fire to start his Chicago Bears career. He played the 5th overall ranked Minnesota Vikings in his debut and then the 5th ranked Baltimore Ravens pass defense on the road. Both tested his mettle in a number of ways. People are starting to wonder if there will be any let-up. Certainly not this coming Sunday. Trubisky returns to Soldier Field where he’ll have to contend with the 4th ranked Carolina Panthers.

Meanwhile Watson has started against the 2nd, 32nd, 19th, 24th and 17th ranked pass defenses in the league. For the most part his excellent start was fueled by playing a string of opponents that offered favorable opportunities in the passing game. Trubisky is still awaiting his. Thankfully a look ahead at the rest of the schedule should get people excited.

Mitch Trubisky breakout could be looming in the next month

After Carolina thing could be easing up on the rookie. Over the final nine games of the season, the Bears will play six games against opponents with a defense ranked 16th or lower against the pass:

  • at Saints (28th)
  • vs. Lions (23rd)
  • at Eagles (29th)
  • vs. 49ers (27th)
  • at Lions (23rd)
  • vs. Browns (17th)

Granted this doesn’t solve the persistent issue for Chicago which is their undermanned receiving corps. Any defense is hard to attack without adequate weapons. At the same time these games will present an opportunity for Trubisky to strike for big plays and gain confidence. If the defense and running game continue to hold up their ends of the bargain, this team might have an outside chance of making noise in January.

Trubisky ha shown himself to be a gamer. He doesn’t lack for confidence and isn’t easily rattled by early struggles or pressure. The Bears believe in him and know with enough time he’ll only get better. Fans are just eager to see him have that breakout game. That will come when the time is right. It may be coming soon.
