Bart Starr:  Abraham Lincoln

The man known as “Honest Abe” is widely viewed as the greatest president in American history. It’s hard to argue given the accomplishments. He freed the slaves from bondage, preserved the union by winning the Civil War and was one of the first to suggest women had a right to vote. He steadied the ship during a tumultuous time and got it back to harbor without sinking. Many other characters overshadowed him in his day, but over time his light only grew brighter.

That is Bart Starr in a nutshell. Pro football was in the midst of a civil war of sorts between the NFL and the AFL. On a Green Bay Packers team loaded with characters and future Hall of Famers, he was merely viewed as the manager. Yet the leadership and coolness under pressure were trademarks of Lincoln he embodied to the fullest. Green Bay became a beacon of race tolerance in the 1960s and Starr, with his five rings eventually got his due down the years.
